Movement Journey

Ryan’s movement story comes with some dark chapters, the first of which was during his professional football career when he endured a potentially career-ending knee injury at 23 years old during his time playing in the Turkish Premier League. He blew out his posterior cruciate ligament in his right knee during training and four weeks later his knee gave out entirely during a match in Istanbul. Up until then, Ryan had relied on his raw talent and natural strength which had carried him through most injuries, but this one proved to be the tipping point. He went into a deep depression and his parents advised him to either stop playing and start studying or to get back onto the field and address his body issues with more care. And so his fitness journey began. He slowly built up his physio and mobility, while paying attention to his eating and overall diet. Ryan wasn’t the player he used to be, but through applying the correct level of movement and care, he was able to play for another eight years professionally, which was a victory in itself. Another victory emerged for Ryan, which rapidly became his new passion – the love for health and fitness, which transformed his career and took him in a new direction – Ryan the gym owner. Together with a partner, Ryan launched PointBreak gym in Cape Town, which ran successfully for six years and catered for a host of clientele by offering a range of training options. In the midst of this new career path, Ryan found himself in a perilous situation. He was witness to a man falling three stories off a balcony and compelled to assist, Ryan jumped off to get to the victim’s aid. In the process he unfortunately broke and dislocated his left ankle, but also managed to stabilise the victim and, ultimately, save his life. The doctor who treated Ryan in hospital was convinced that his years of training and movement had saved Ryan from a shattered spine and potential death. His new passion for movement had in effect saved his life. Ryan’s story of movement runs deep and he’s seen the benefits of hard work and consistency. As a trainer he brings passion, commitment and hard work, with no short cuts – he is the ultimate movement warrior.

She represented South Africa internationally from a very young age as both a dancer and rhythmic gymnast. This took her in a new direction on her fitness journey after studying Exercise Science & Sports Massage, which is now her passion and full-time career. Kirsten is a huge advocate of movement, having spent most of her early life expressing herself through the art of dance movement and now applies this in her daily life in maintaining a level of strength, flexibility, power, and endurance that she developed over the years while dancing. During the course of 2019 she also started to explore the benefits of a plant-based diet and hasn't looked back. She is a passionate ambassador for helping people develop a healthy and sustainable lifestyle, that applies intention to every aspect of one's life.

Jeannine Wagner

Jeannine has always enjoyed dancing, which originally started with ballet before moving onto modern dance. This led into overall fitness as a teenager when the aerobic's craze was at its peak. She then joined her sister's gym as an aerobics instructor in her final year at school, complete with headbands, leg warmers and hi-tops! Her career has mostly been as an executive assistant, creating order out of chaos and has balanced this with being the mother of her 10-year-old daughter, which comes with a unique range of exercise of its own!

Movement Journey

Jeannine's first taste of truly enjoying movement came during the aerobics craze, where moving to music invoked such good feelings, which translated even further onto the dance floor! With a slender frame she's needed to train to keep her muscle tone and to maintain her posture. Having reached her 50's, exercise and keeping her shape has become more challenging, but the benefit of feeling stronger and having more energy has never been more important in staying as healthy as possible. She jumped at the chance of joining The Movement Empire and has benefitted greatly from Ryan, Kirsten and Maegan's training sessions. Ironically her fitness journey has come full circle from aerobics in the 80's to working out once again with The Movement Empire.

Thina Hako

Thina is a 25 year old working as a motion designer in Cape Town. He’s led an active lifestyle from an early age, including riding bikes or doing the daily 40 minute march home from school every day. He’d always push himself, in the continuous search for self-improvement, which meant turning a walk home into a run, why go slow when you can go fast and save time for other things!. Later on he took up downhill skateboarding, which again pushed his boundaries and emphasised the need for control over his body, particularly in extreme speed situations. Unsurprisingly the sport left Thina with many scars, which he sees as not only reminders of the falls, but more importantly that he’s had the courage to get up and ride on, literally and figuratively – although it might have been wiser to wear knee/elbow guards in hindsight!. Office work life is when his active life started tapering off as a result of long hours at a computer. After two years of sedentary life, Thina put an end to this and joined a gym, primarily to change his looks, but then found a deeper meaning in pushing himself and getting his strength back and enjoying the fulfilment of competing with himself again.

Movement Journey

Thina started his fitness journey in 2019 after doing his first pull up at the gym. His strength started improving with weight training, which he then supplemented with body weight training at home. This played a key part in not only building his strength, but getting to understand how to control all aspects of his body, but also drive up his fitness. The Movement Empire has given him confidence to improve, little by little and not hold back wherever he finds himself, either at the gym, at home or life overall. In Thina’s opinion Movement is key to a full life, humans are made to move – if we don’t we crumble and lose our mental and physical edge. Training might be tough sometimes, but he’s at his happiest in the steamy mist of a session and he knows that his future self will be grateful for the work done now. The more you move, the further you’ll go in life!.

However at the age of 30 after experiencing continuous back issues, Dino’s body fell into a downward spiral. His training took a knock, as well as his energy levels and mental state. His exercise routine was mainly weight-based training, however continuous body issues affected his strength and he slowly had to change the way he trained. He consulted multiple specialists to try find the catalyst for his pain. It has been a long 16 year journey. He has had to work through his pain, building up a high pain threshold to avoid the depression that came when not being able to exercise consistently. With time comes wisdom, and he started transitioning into different styles of exercises where he could still challenge his body but without too much distress. Finally, he found functional bodyweight movement within The Movement Empire, using correct movements and form, with emphasis on quality over quantity. His body has transformed and he has found a life-changing balance of eating and training correctly, whilst strengthening the areas needed to master his back pain. The simple benefits of movement within The Movement Empire have kept him mentally stable and physically fit, and has revolutionised his training regime.
